How It Works
Our Kodak Photo CD System enables Gamma to transfer your photographic images, negatives and/or transparencies (film formats to 4 x 5) to a unique compact disc, Photo CD.

Photo CD offers convenient digital storage for archiving, image enhancement, presentation, distribution and other applications. Images are displayed and manipulated by many popular software programs on a  computer with a CD-ROM disc drive. Images can be output as hard copy, written back to film, or used as direct output for digital prints.

Gamma's workstation provides digital scans to a Master Photo CD or the Pro CD disc utilizing Kodak's Enhanced Data Path upgrade. To utilize this upgrade to its full potential, the PhotoShop L.U.T.'s (look up tables) can be downloaded from Kodak's web site at http://www.kodak.com. A single Master Photo CD disc accommodates approximately 100 quality images; a Pro Photo CD accommodates 25 high quality images because of an additional high resolution file. Both the Master and Pro CD can be updated at a later date if at the onset they are produced with a lesser number of images.

With digital scans, the images are converted to digital information and stored on the disc in a file called the image pac. Each file in the image pac corresponds to a different image resolution ranging from the lowest base/16, to the highest, base X16. The master Photo CD has five file formats, the Pro Photo CD, designed for the more demanding user, has the standard five file formats plus one more at significantly higher resolution, base X64. Just one digital scan allows you to use an image's low  resolution for positioning, then select its higher resolution for reproduction without the need for a second scan.

The following chart illustrates the image resolutions in the image pac file format.
